Shopping for Camera again…

For those of you that knows me, you’d probably know about my old D70 that’s retired. I was out about KL today looking for a replacement… since I’m now stuck onto the Nikon F Mount, my choices are basically the D70 again, the D2H (unfortunately its still the same old price here in Malaysia), or the D100 (frankly, that’s not even in my list since the D70 costs less than half and does about the same thing or better) and the Fujifilm S3.
Today my decision is more geared towards another D70 but eventually I will need another camera that has a better weather protection than the D70, possibly the D2H when the price does eventually drop in this part of the world… even though its just 4 megapixels.

One of those efficient days…

And today is one of them… usually I dont do too many things on a Saturday, but today I collected my 8×12″ prints from the neighbourhood shop, bought extra piping, fitted them onto the water heater, water sealed the joints (just in case it leaks in the future again!), washed my car and watched a DVD. And its just 6:30pm now. Just feel good. too bad I dont have my digital SLR with me now, or else I would have taken something like 100 shots.

Prints from 6 mega pixel Nikon D70

Did some prints from the D70 recently, and with the size of the picture saved from the D70 at full resolution, you’re just about able to do a 8×12″ picture at exactly 250dpi. At least that’s the requirement from my neighbourhood photo developer . The output is not too bad, but I have a shot that looked a little soft but that’s probably because of the kit lens on the D70 at 18mm. The second shot was crisp and taken with the Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8. One day I’ll try and blow it up or do crops, and see if a picture developped with less than 250dpi will have quality compromises.

Nikon F5 brochure…

While I was at the Nikon Service Centre last friday, I managed to obtain a brochure for the Nikon F5 SLR body. Considering between the older F4 and the F5, but the F5 was all they had.
Brought it to the office hoping to read the brochure over there on Monday but I can’t find it anymore. No idea where I left it, other than remembering it was on my office table… arrgggh!!!

Going back to film

With my D70 out of action now, I’m going back to film. Stocked my dry cabinet up with 5 rolls of Kodak TX400 B&W films.
Actually thinking about learning how to develop my own films now that digital is everywhere and you dont know when the last B&W developing studio is going to switch to just printing out digital files. Not sure if they sell the chemicals here in Kuala Lumpur, but will go stock up some when I’m in Singapore soon.

There are some nice websites that teaches the basics of B&W film developing… and I thikn I will need to buy myself a timer and a thermometer soon.

Hot water rain

Had a corroded water pipe burst today at home. Its the little jumper pipe connecting the water heater to the shower. On first inspection, looks like the hot water has somehow corroded the connectors (made of metal that looks like steel).
Managed to buy a replacement flexible pipe (less than 1ft long) but will have to investigate if this is becuase of wrongly spec’ed pipes or just that the old pipe came from a bad batch.

Upgraded MT from 2.661 to 3.14

Just finished the upgrade for Movable Type from version 2.661 to 3.14. Had some temporary problems with the upgrade in the beginning. The script mt-upgrade30.cgi just gave a server error whenever it ran so the upgrade was not possible. The solution for that was, I had to copy the MT 3.14 files into the old directory structure on a local hard disk and after deleting the whole MT directory on the web server, I copied the whole local directory to the server. Basically, doing the copy & replace of the old 2.661 files on my PC instead of the server. After that, running mt-upgrade30.cgi and mtupgrade31.cgi was fine.
So the moral… backup before you upgrade..

Back to Basics

I’ve been dabbling in my old mothballed F801s ever since I’ve been crippled with the D70 bring service for the next few weeks.
Tried to use up all the B&W films I’ve been accumulating… and just realised that there’s actually something alluring about using film. I’ve tried to fool around with the digital files in Photoshop to get the same grain effect of a ISO1600 film, but just can’t get it. Not yet anyways.

Major Car Servicing

Had the unfortunate combination of squeaky suspension and worn out tires on my Proton Waja the last few months. Since the next few weeks will be relatively busy, I got out for the 75000 km servicing and got both the nagging problems fixed.
The standard suspension is supposed to come from Kayaba and its crap as far as I know. I remembered just changing it last year about the same time and 365 days later its squeaking. Changed it into a pair of Monroes for the front and back. On the box at least its supposed to be made in Argentina. That’s the last place I would have thought of for a country manufacturing shock absorbers!
