Travels: Kirifuri Kougen: Tochigi Prefecture, Japan

Noon at the Kirifuri Highland
When you look at the map of Nikko, there are 3 major attractions. There’s Nikko town proper, with all its UNESCO temples where the majority of tourists are dropped, then to the west there’s Lake Chuzenji and the Onsen at the end of the road, including Senjogahara, which I did in the last trip… and finally there’s the east with Kirifuri highlands. And a visit is not over till I’ve gone to Kirifuri, which is the destination this week. Mountains, forests, valleys & cows!

Its a similar early morning sight. I am having a McGriddles at the McDonalds at Asakusa in the alley near to the Tobu railway station, waiting for the Tobu Sightseeing Center to open its doors at 7:45am to buy the 4400yen All Nikko Pass. The current expectation is that this will not be as impressive as the latter but the only way to find out would be to go and have a look.

Tobu-Nikko Train Stationmaster's office (Leica M6, 50mm Summicron)

While having my McGriddles, it looks as though the bus ride to Kirifuri Kogen will be cheaper to go a-la-carte rather than a full All Nikko pass. A bus ride to Kirifuri cost just about 650 yen according to the web. Making the quick decision to jump on the next available train to Nikko without waiting for the sightseeing centre to open. Looks like I don’t need the All-Nikko pass this time.  Again, cheapest ticket is the 2hr train to Tobu Nikko at 1320yen. The limited express trains costs double as they have reserved seats and possibly half an hour quicker. They seem to call these limited express and the services have names like Kegon and Kinu. For me, I can spend 30 minutes extra. Everything is routine now for me with the Tobu station at Asakusa. This is my third time here. Buy ticket, go to platform 5 and board the first 2 trains away from the station entrance. Remember, the other train cars get left behind on the way to Tobu Nikko.

Mamiya RZ67 Pro II, 50mm f4.5 W, Fuji RXP, on the Senjogahara Plains

It is an early start. I’m here on the second weekend and I think I should be going back to complete Nikko, but to another direction, and another attraction… hiking in the highland marshes. This will be an ideal location to do some landscaping pictures. Of course it would be good if I was there when the sun is coming up, but no car and the first bus is later than that anyway, so got to file up the thoughts first.

Tobu-Nikko standard train (Ricoh GR Digital)

I’m not too sure there are metros running at this time of the morning, it’s 5am and I’m taking the Tokyo taxi instead, zipping past quiet streets, trying not to look at the ridiculously fast counter on the dashboard that shows the eventual 4000Yen price to get from Shinagawa to Asakusa by taxi. That’s almost the price of the all-in-one ticket to Nikko including the train fare! I’m on my way to Tobu-Asakusa Station to catch the first semi fast train to Nikko. Semi fast because the real first train stops everywhere and would take longer time to get to the destination so this is the second train it seems. Semi-fast too because if you double your fare you take the glamourously faster super-express-whatever trains that shave 20 mins off a 2hr 30mins journey. Not enough for me. I’ll stick to the cheap one.

Its a scouting trip because I’m fed up with the weather. Its just too much. Cloudy and raining the whole weekend and I’m here expected to be hanging around all the time in Tokyo. Rain or no rain, I’m off to Nikko to have a look. The temples will be covered today, but what I will really scout are the wilderness and mountains this place offers. Next trip will be more specialized. However don’t think for once I’m going light!

In the backpack, a Mamiya RZ67 with 50mm lens, and 2 film backs. One loaded with Velvia 100 I don’t expect to use at all considering the weather, and a couple of Tri-X rolls. In the utility pack, Ricoh GR Digital and a Leica M2 with 35mm Summicron ASPH.

Train to Nikko, or shall I say, the cheapest way to get to Nikko I can find is the Tobu line to Tobu-Nikko from Asakusa Tobu line station. Cost 1320yen. Taking the 7:10 train today. The 7:30 express train cost 1400yen extra because its more ‘express’. One thing to be really sure is that your train car actually reaches Tobu-Nikko. The last few I saw has different destinations, so my guess is along the way they drop cars so only the Tobu-Nikko train actually gets there. The train is oldish, but hey, it moves. Going to take a nap… Been a chore to get to Asakusa before 7 am.

937hrs: And it has to happen. Just arrived at Nikko and the rain is coming down hard – for Japanese standards, that is. So hard it is probably stupid to walk anywhere in this rain. So its time for a morning katsudon and salad in a restaurant next to the station. Could be a nice weather to shoot b&w in. Although this place is not full of people today (likely because of the rain) its mostly elderly hikers at the station. Should have borrowed an umbrella on the way here! The buses plying the routes here are from the Tobu group and they look quite high class for a town bus! Too bad I have plans to take the bus today. Walk is good!

Tokyo, 8 June 2008

Its a strange day. Spent the afternoon in the office on a sunday, and in the evening over to check out photo shops in Ginza. At that time heard news of fatal stabbings at Akihabara district, luckily a place I do not venture to most of the trips I make to Tokyo. Some guy, disgruntled with life, decided to mow down pedestrians and stab everyone he sees.
I’m waiting for a 11pm meeting at Strings Intercontinental Hotel here in Shinagawa JR Station. Having a latte at Dean & Deluca’s at the station. Tokyo is still a safe place. Next to me a girl left her handbag on the long bar while walking off to buy her coffee. Was hoping to look for a wifi spot here but all the points, and there are about 10 visible SSIDs here, are locked. The guy to my right is surfing on his e-mobile data card, presumably HSDPA connection.

Its nice sitting here at 10pm on a Sunday night sipping latte and listening to the start of part 3 of Audible’s version of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace…

Travels: Sakura Blossoms at Meguro, Tokyo

_dsc3973.jpg

Took these photos at least a month ago when I carried my D2H and 70-180mm macro lens over to Tokyo. Woke up at 5am and walked from my hotel to a canal which didn’t have any name, but a google seems to say its in a place called Naka-Meguro (maybe that’s the canal itself?). Ok its near Meguro JR station, downhill from there. I have to check the EXIF but I believe these pictures were taken either on March 31st or April 1 2008, at the height of the 2008 Sakura season.

Ok, no words, just pictures…

Mount Fuji take-3: Five Lakes area

m00101image0005.jpg

Starting the day lucky. Weather forecast earlier in the week was cloudy and raining today Saturday, but the skies were done with the rain after nonstop downpour yesterday and this morning we finally have the sun. So its time for Mount Fuji, and exactly, the five lakes region. Destination town will be Kawaguchiko at the foot of Fujisan. Have tried to see the mountain twice before in the past. In Kamakura there was rain, in Hakone dense fog. Elusive as it is, I going closer each time. This trip I’ll be bringing some serious lightweight firepower. Leica M6, Ricoh GR Digital and a Fujifilm GA645i. 120 films are a combo of Fuji Velvia 50 and Fortia. 35mm includes Kodak 160VC and a host of black and white films. Not intentionally for landscape, but just happen to have it with me. Will test out the 160VC for landscape. Wierd choice I know.

Tokyo: 8 March 2008

This trip is supposed to be different, putting work aside. But still find myself going to Tsukiji fish market in the morning for breakfast. Same old routine for the last one year here. But this time I have my Tri-X film. Hmmm. Ok will make the most of it. But very determined to do something different for the rest of the weekend. But the next stop will be a visit to Fujiya Camera at Nakano JR stop. Same old routine again. I’m out or creative ideas. No tourist spots for me for sure.
So this time its tuna and minced tuna with the rice for 1000 yen. Nice way to start the day. And after that its half an hour strolling with the leica and a roll of film. Too bad ran out of battery for metering so had to do a premeter with the ricoh gr digital and locked in the exposure at f5.6 and 1/125s for the most common scenes. Compensate plus or minus up to 2 stops depending on whether I shooting into a shop or on the street in the morning sun.

Narita Airport, Japan

These photos were taken at the airport, Saturday 8 Dec, when I had 1 hour to kill at Terminal 2 Narita Airport Japan. Shot a roll of Neopan 400 with the Leica so that I can process it with another roll that was shot earlier in the morning at Tsukiji.

f00608image0003.jpg

This shot looks a lot better full sized. Was framed with the photo book “Photography in Japan” as the central subject. By the way, the curved book shelf was to blame for the ‘distortion’ at the bottom, the lens was perfect! (Leica M6 + 35mm Cron ASPH + Neopan 400 + HC110B)

 f00608image0005.jpg

The other picture I took of this “hole in the wall” was taken at an angle instead of head on. Didn’t work as well as this one.  Beer and octopus ball… Nice… (Leica M6 + 35mm Cron ASPH + Neopan 400 + HC110B)

Morning at Tsukiji

f00605image0020.jpg

Waking up early this morning for my obligatory fish breakfast at Tsukiji. Its at 7am this morning. Could wake up earlier like a typical tourist, but you get the same thing later in the morning since its not possible to watch the tuna auction anymore. The first problem is getting there. Staying at the Sheraton Miyako this time, it involves taking a metro over on the Mita line and then changing to the Hibiya line to get to Tsukiji station.

Sunday in Tokyo…

 _1003305.jpg

First of all, no, I still did some shopping in Tokyo. But the good news is that the value seems to have gone down. What I have bought so far since arriving this Sunday afternoon: 2 Printfile binders to store my negative sleeves, 1 Artisans & Artists camera strap for my Leica (ACAM-102), 2 rolls of Kodak Portra 160 VC film and finally a leather mousepad, since I think I need one at home before I get some problem with my wrist!

If I had unlimited budget today, I would have bought the white colour Nikkor 28-70mm f2.8… Its just rare to see a white colour Nikon lens. Ok, some call it gray. Was tempted also to buy a pack of Kodak D76 developer in powder form. Didn’t do it at the end, as I still have a litre of HC110 I have not used yet.

Shopping aside, been a nice day in Tokyo, whatever was left of it. When I got to the hotel the sun was about to set, and mostly spent the whole day wandering around Ginza, Nakano and Shinjuku all in the dark. I already know where I was going to go, so I could easily do all in 3 hours. Helps to have a Suica metro/JR card and a rough idea which direction I was going to go since I dont have a railway map with me. Didn’t get lost so I guess I was lucky this time. I was also lucky not so spend more than 10,000 yen this time! But then again, I still have 4 more days to go.
